Post - Truth

" Post - Truth "

" Truth is like the sun, you can shut it out for a time, but it ain't goin' away. "

                                                 - Elvis Presley.

Hello readers! Here I am going to write down a blog. In this blog, I am going to present my thinking and knowledge about the term post - truth. This blog is inspired by Dr. Dilip sir barad, Department of English, Mkbu. This blog is a part of our sunday reading.

' post - Truth'  is a new word, It has been chosen as the " Word of the year for 2016 by the Oxford English Dictionary. " Post - truth is a compound word, which is a word comprised of two words joined together to create a new word with a new meaning. Post - truth describes a situation in which the importance of actual fact is less. The prefix post means - after, used to designate a time when something becomes irrelevant.

The term post - truth was popularized with the 2004 publication of the book - " THE POST TRUTH ERA by Ralph keyes. "

This term is most often used in post - truth politics. A political philosophy which stresses emotion and personal prejudices over objective fact or specific policy. A related term is " Post - Truthers. "

   Definitions of post - truth:-

  According to Cambridge dictionary;

" Post - truth means, relating to a situation in which people are more likely to accept an argument based on their emotions and beliefs, rather than one based on facts. "

   According to Oxford dictionary;

" Post - truth is an adjective defined as relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal beliefs. "

So, after this discussion now we all are quite aware about the word post - truth. We can say that it is more connected with one's emotion rather than what is actuals fact.

While we are discussing about post - truth we have one question that - " How we arrived in a post truth era, when alternative facts replace actual facts and feelings have more weight than evidence? "  To understand this question let's do some more discussion about post - truth. As we know that we all are living in the post - truth era, what we need to do is that -  " Lies need to be challenged always. "  Truths need to be repeated. There is an experimental evidence that shows that people who have mistaken views can be convinced by the facts. If the facts are repeated often enough. There is something called the " Repetition effect " Which allows people to believe something when they hear it often, whether it is true or not.

People who believe in truth can not just say - " Those guys are Idiots. " and leave the field. If they do, then only liars will have a voice. So, that is why we always need to challenge lies and the audience for the lies can hear another point of view.

  According to keane ;

" Post - truth is not simply opposite of truth, it is more complicated. "

We all are living in the age of technology. In the modern age of social media fear, any rumour and gossip can spread alarmingly fast with feelings and emotions often carrying more weight rather than facts and evidence. Generally we believe in the facts  which have any evidence or proof with that. Without any kind of evidence no one will going to believe. But, In post truth era it's not like that. Because there evidence are less important and emotions and personal beliefs are everything.

While I was searching and reading about post - truth. I found one tweet that I want to share here. So, it helps you to understand it in a better way.

" Some Examples of post - truth :-"

After discussing about post - truth, now let's have a look on examples of it. We have to understand the examples of post truth with two important aspects which are given as below.

  1. Post - truth in social media.

  2. Post - truth in politics.

When we are talking and discussing about social media everybody publishes whatever they want. Fake news websites are widely common. Publishing lies and fabricated news. Politicians in the post truth era appeals to emotions and impose personal views. They hide the truth and convince people of what is untrue.

Social media is the most effective tool used by everyone. But, what is the problem with social media tool is that they offer a very quick way to convey one sided information. Without giving the option to verify or to cross check the authenticity of this information or to present the opposite opinion for the sake of balance.

Everyone thinks that it must be true because it is on the platform of social media. But, it is not like that. It is completely our wrong perception. First, we need to clarify and we need to check it. Only after that we can send it to others.

" Don't use social media to impress people; use it to impact people. "

 There is one famous scene from movie -  "Housefull." In that scene, Arjun Rampal asked some questions to Akshay kumar and besides them there was a " Lie detector Machine . " Through that machine we came to know that whether the person is saying truth or lie. In that particular scene of the movie Arjun Said that ;

                " I hate Liars. "

We can say that social media plays very important role in spreading the news. We don't know that is it true or not. We simply pass on to others. and that is how it continues to spread false things. There are so many lies that everyone tells on Facebook and Instagram. Which we can also connect with post truth. So, let's see one example.

" Acting as if you know about everything  more than you actually do. "

It is very simple to create a facade of knowledge online. You post a photo online on your Facebook page or Instagram to show people and they will think that you are an intelligent, well read human being. Even if you never made it past page one. Just to show other people that we are doing this or that how easily we are telling lies. From this picture and example we can clearly understand that people are doing nothing but lying to others, with the help of this social media platform.

If you want to read about further examples on Lies of social media.. You can click here

By clicking on this link.. You can read about many more examples that how lies prevailing in our society through social media.

Post - truth in politics :-

Post truth and politics is a course that has grown out of  the study of propaganda and public relations as media and political tools. Fake news and post truth signal a crisis of the liberal democratic system of public communication. There are different views on whether fake news is deliberate political propaganda or simply fabricated content created to drive online traffic.

Post - truth refers to difficulties in public communication too. In a post - truth world, the abundance of online content as well as the intensity and speed of digital communication have paved the way for an " Epistemic crisis. "

" Exaggerating your level of politics activities :-"

It is very much simple to share countless pictures on Facebook, on Instagram, or Twitter and many others about your politics activities. But are we really spending much time being involved in any politics activity - No.. People love to pretend that they are very much conscious about politics and all.. But we know that they are simply lying. One or the other wat we all are doing the same thing. From this picture we can get idea about that " I voted " Sticker marks the extent of political activities.

If you want to know more about how post truth and politics connect  with each other. You can click here and read it in the detail.

https://theconversation.com/we-know-politicians-lie-but-do-we-care. Click here to read.

How thinking skill workshop helped us in better understanding of post - truth :-

Critical thinking is a part of our studies. As a literature student we have to think critically. As we all know that Department of  English organized thinking skill workshop by Dr. Milan pandya. and post truth is also very important if we connect it with our thinking skill.

We always need to think before we come on any conclusions. If we will not think properly ans we will not apply our mind than we can not understand that what is truth and what is not. What we need to do is that we need to apply our mind first and we need to cultivate our reading and thinking skills. If we will think properly we can tell to others that Don't spread fake news. & we can only do that with the help our thinking skill.. So our thinking always helped us to understand between what is truth and what is lie, what is real and what is fake.

In the era of post truth! Criterias are completely changed. We can understand this with certain points.

     Lies             Replaces       Truth

   Evidence      Replaces        Emotions

 Personal analysis  Replaces  verified

                                                      Information

One opinion    Replaces  multiple opinions

Conclusion :- In conclusion I would like to say that I presented my understanding about post truth and also gave some examples about it. I hope that my blog is useful for you to understand about post - truth.

  Thank you for visiting...

Thinking task : The Rape of the Lock

 " Thinking Activity "

Hello readers! Here I am going to write down a blog on Alexander pope's mock heroic poem - " The Rape of the Lock. "

This blog is inspired by vaidehi Ma'am as a part of thinking activity. In this blog,  I am answering to some alloted questions on the basis of my learning of this poem.

' THE RAPE OF THE LOCK'

Alexander pope's - " The Rape of the lock"

Is a mock - heroic narrative poem. The first version of this poem published in the year 1712 and it consisted of two cantos. and when it again published in the year 1714. At that time It was expanded to five cantos.

" The Rape of the lock " based on true and real incident and written to reconcile the two families that had been estranged by it. This poem recounts the story of a young woman who has a lock of hair and it was stolen by an ardent young man. When we heard the word rape we connect it with sexual or physical rape. But, In this poem - pope used this word rape in a different way. Here the word Rape has not any kind of connection to our sexuality. But Alexander pope In his poem - The Rape of the lock. and here rape means - " To stole or " To snatch " Something.

Here I am placing one video. So, that it will  help you to understand my answers based on this poem.

Alexander pope :- Alexander pope ( 21st May 1688 - 30th May 1744) was an English poet, translator, and satirist of the Enlightenment era who is considered one of the most prominent English poets of the Early 18th century.

Alexander pope is best known for his great works. It includes satirical poetry including - " The Rape of the lock " ," An essay on criticism" and for his translation of 'Homer '.  He inspired by the classical Greek writers. He started writing at the age of 12. Pope also translated many Greek works.

Now let's understand this mock - heroic epic poem " The rape of the lock " by answering some important questions.

Question 1 : According to you , who is the protagonist of the poem Belinda or Clarissa?  Why? Give your answers with logical reasons.

In this answer of the question first we have to define the character sketch of Belinda or clarissa. After that we can come to on conclusion that who is the protagonist of this poem.

  Character sketch of Belinda :-

Belinda is one of the main and major character of this poem. In this poem - Alexander pope has presented Belinda as a complex character. He has presented her character in different roles and under different shades. The character of Belinda has created much controversy since the publication of the poem.

Firstly, we can say that Belinda is the heroine of this poem. It is only her character around whom the story of the eni poem is woven. Pope talked about Belinda's beauty in the poem.

" Bright as the sun, her eyes the gazer strike. And, like the sun, the shines on all alike. "

So, In this way we can observed that Belinda 's beauty compared with all this  things especially with the sun.

Secondly, Belinda is very mixed and complicated. She portrays the time of aristocratic means upper class and fashionable ladies. She is also equally very beautiful and charming. The poet invest her almost with divine beauty. Besides all this admiration related to her beauty. She has many denunciating qualities in her character.

From this picture we can understand that she is looking herself into the mirror. and we can get the idea about how much beauty was important to Belinda's character.

  Character sketch of Clarissa :-

The character of clarissa playa an important role in this poem. She is a lady at court who lends the Baron her scissors to chop off Belinda's lock of hair. So, we can say that it is her character who gave scissors to Baron.

Alexander pope very well presented the character of clarissa in his poem - The Rape of the lock. But, As we can see that clarissa's name means - " Clarity " hints that the reader might do well to take her wise advice.

In canto 5 clarissa gave one speech. Her sorry obvious makes good sense. In her speech , she declared that :

" Virtue is most attractive to the soul. "

" Beauties in vain their pretty eyes may roll; charms strike the sight, but merit wins the soul. "

Clarissa conclude her speech by telling this lines to Belinda that all of her airs, fights & scolding will probably fail and if she keeps thing in perspective and rises above the whole issue, she will win in the end.

With this reference, she added that beauty and charms may strike our site for a  very small period of time. But, when it comes to merit, it can win someone's soul forever rather than the beauty.

This is the moral of the speech delivered by clarissa in last canto of this poem.

We can say that " Belinda " Is the protagonist of the poem. She is a wealthy and beautiful young woman who travels to Hampton Court for a day of socializing. Her remarkable beauty attracts the attention of the baron, who snips  off a lock of her hair in his " Infatuation. "

We can compare these two characters. Both the characters are different in a way of their thinking.

   Belinda                   Clarissa

Conditioning of the society -   Clarity

Beauty is important  - virtue is important

Always Fearful     -   Always fearless

Voice of the author - Trival rules of society

Earlier we have seen that It is the character of Belinda whom the story of the entire poem is woven around. Clarissa believed that beauty is not everything rather than virtue. But, for Belinda beauty is everything. It matters to her.

So, from all these we can conclude that Belinda is the main protagonist of the poem.

Question 2 : what is beauty? Write your views about it.

Answer : Here In this particular answer of the question we have to define our views on beauty.

As we know that we all have different mindsets from each other. We all think very differently. Suppose, my views on beauty is different from others. Everyone thinks on their own way and according to that they will define.

In our present poem - " The Rape of the lock. " We have seen that Belinda and Clarissa also had different views on the word - beauty.

      According to Google ;

Beauty means - " A combination of qualities, such as shape, colour or form that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight. "

    One more definition ;

Beauty means - " The quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to mind. "

If we compare these things with our present time we can get idea that we have given so much importance to beauty which is only and only related to the appearance of someone. We also know that people are easily get judge by their looks. We have words like - ' Body shaming and all. ' people only judges someone by their looks. But, As per my thinking that is totally wrong.

Beauty is something which is not in hands. We all are creation of Gods. I believe that beauty is important. But not that much that we forget about other aspects of life.

We all have 1 Inner beauty & 2. Outer beauty.  One way or the other way Outer beauty is related with appearance. While, Inner beauty reflects someone 's way of thinking and his nature. According to me :-

" Inner beauty is much more important rather than outer appearance  Or beauty. "

I am not saying that outer beauty or look & appearance doesn't matter. But, for example when we meet someone without knowing anything about him or her we starts judging by only seeing their looks and this is not right. In gujarati language we generally used to say that :-

   " દેખાવને શું ધોઈ પીવો છે?. "

This line suggests us that No one should give so much importance to appearance. Because In last someone's inner beauty always wins our heart.

In canto 5 , clarissa wants to give the same message that Beauty is temporary. It vanishes with the age. What is more important is someone's soul and that is going to win in the last.

Question 3 : Find out a research paper on " The Rape of the lock. " Give the details of the paper and write down in brief what it says about the poem by Alexander pope.

Answer : While I was searching for a research paper on Alexander pope's " The Rape of the lock. " I found one. So, Here I am placing one link here and by clicking on that you can get it.

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/310832052_DEPICTION_OF_CONTEMPORARY_LIFE_IN_THE_RAPE_OF_THE_LOCK

This Research done by Dr. George Kolanchery. and he talked about " Depiction of contemporary life in Rape of the lock.

In this particular research he talked about how our present or contemporary life was presented on pope's representative poem. This poem captures perfectly the ethos of the aristocratic means upper class people or we can say society of that time.

" No writer reflects so clearly and completely the spirit of his own day as Alexander pope does. "

                                         - Lesile Stephen.

In his poem - " The Rape of the lock " be reflects the life of the fashionable aristocratic society of his time completely. The tone of the age  , the frivolous aspect of feminist nowhere exquisitely pictures than in this poem.

It is the epic of trifling ; a torn from the pretty, pleasure - seeking life of fashionable beauty. We can understand that how pope satires the society of upper class people through his poem.

So, we can conclude by saying that from this research we can get idea about what it says about the poem - The Rape of the lock written by Alexander pope.

Question 4 : Write your views about the significance of hair. Is it symbolic?

Answer : In pope 's poem - The Rape of the lock the title of the poem is very important. Pope Symbolizes   " Hair "   In this poem as a youth, beauty and social status of woman. All this things used in the poem through the symbol of " Belinda 's hair " Which is cut by baron.

As we know that women's long hair has always been a symbol of beauty. When Baron cut off Belinda's lock of hair she behaved like now she lost everything in her life.

  We can also understand that hair is not only a superficial symbol of beauty, youth and wealth, but also a reflection of deeper problems that rooting in our society. So, In this poem - pope also suggest that;

      " Hair is a symbol. "

Through this symbol he wants to convey a message.

We can understand that " Lock of hair " Symbolizes three main things : -

1.The absurdity of the importance afforded to female beauty in society.

  2. The loss of the lock as the symboic loss of Belinda 's reputation on society.

 3. Hair emphasizes the ridiculous amount of emphasis placed on female beauty in society.

So, we can say that hair is important and it also Symbolizes many things in our present narrative poem - " The Rape of the lock " Written by ' Alexander pope. '

  Conclusion :-

In conclusion we can say that through this pope analysed  many things which are prevailing in our society and he presented this things very well which we all can understand through his great poem.

    Thank you for visiting...

Visit to Victoria nature park

 "Academic visit to Victoria Park"

Hello Readers! Here, I am going to write down a blog on my experience about our academic visit to Victoria park. Through this blog, I want to share my thoughts about how this educational trip helped us, Which was organized by our Department of English. This blog is inspired by yesha Ma'am as a part of thinking activity.

On 20th july , 2022  we sem 1 and sem 3 students including  Yesha Ma'am with us visited Victoria nature park. It was our first academic trip from the department of English. We all want to thanked yesha ma'am for organized this one day educational trip for us, because specially it was planned by her and also our beloved seniors. We learned about so many things during the entire trip.

We all enjoyed a lot as well as observed so many things, around us. When we visited there it was a rainy atmosphere. So, we felt more enthusiastic. We all loved to visit these kind of places when there was a cloudy and rainy atmosphere. and  we can say that Victoria nature park is one of them.

As a student of literature, first we observed everything, and after that we can write down about how it helped us. We can share our experience through our writing and what we have learned from that.

Due to rain, the sights and scenery of Victoria nature park,  became more beautiful.

1. Purpose of the visit to Victoria nature park :-

The main purpose of our visit  was academic. We all visited Victoria nature park for the better understanding about " Romanticism " Or " Romantic literature", Which is a part of our syllabus. When we visited these types of places like Victoria Park Or any other, We observed everything and then tried to relate it with our studies. We all know that Nature is a very important part of our life, that we can not denied. We all are surrounded by Nature. Before discussing about the connection between Romantic literature and Victoria nature park first we have to understand that " What is Romanticism? "

" Romanticism " Is a literary movement around 1790 - 1850. The movement was characterized by a celebration of  nature and common man, a focus on Individual experience & Idealization of women. In the age of Romantic era, Individualism was emphasized and Romantic poets used "Nature" as a source of inspiration.

The Romantic period is an age of poetry.
William wordsworth, samuel Taylor Coleridge, Lord Byron, percy Bysshe shelley and John keats - these all are the major romantic poets. Romantic age is also known as an " Age of Revolution. " Romantic writers or poets teach us that how to become a happy soul. During this age, Every one is free to write on their own way. We can say that " A new beginning arises in Romantic period because it was not at all connected with the classical age. "

Romantic poets also known as " Lake. Poets. " Means - At the time of evening, they used to go for a walk, observe everything and write down lots of things about the nature.

We can conclude by saying that the purpose of our visit to Victoria nature park was to observe every little thing about nature and how it influence us.

Write about " how nature influence the soul. " ( has it inspired you to write and reflect on something or not).

As we all know that nature plays very vital role in the life of all human beings. We all are surrounded and influenced by nature. Being in nature or even viewing the scenes of nature it always reduced our fear and increased the feeling of pleasure. Nature is very important for our economy. Our forests, rivers, oceans and soils provide us with good food that we eat, the air we breathe, and the water we drink. All this things which we can get from nature. We can't even imagine our life without becoming a part of nature.

 How nature benefit us:-
Nature benefit us in many ways. Here I want to put down some points.

1. Improve our mood.
2. Reduce the feeling of stress.
3.Increase the feeling of happiness.
4 Helps to become more active.
5.Gives aesthetic pleasure.
6. Improve our physical health also.

Nature soothes the soul. Human beings are meant to spend time in nature. But, far too often when we forget about its importance. We all should spent more and more time in nature.
" Nature is something we have available to us every day. "
Spending time outside and connecting to nature has been proved that it improve our health and  well - being. It helps for creative thinking and this is how nature can influence the soul.

  Share your experience :-
Victoria Nature  Park is a forest located in  Bhavnagar. It is very famous for its picnic site. People used to go there and enjoyed there. Here I am sharing my experience about this one day trip. First we all gathered at the gate of Victoria park. When we were waiting for other students to come and join us. We took so many photographs and selfies. When everyone came we started walking. While walking we observed every little thing. Between all this we had so much fun.

After getting tired of walking we had a light meal or breakfast. We all sem 1 students ate together. And that was the best thing. We played games also. From sem 1 student Akshat and Trushali they both sang very well.

We played Dumsharas - In that game we divided our self into two teams. One is us sem 1 students and the other team is sem 3 students. In that game we enjoyed a lot.

My experience of Victoria nature park I want to added one thing that " nature gives us an idea of how to meet new people or how to connect with them. " and it's only possible when you went somewhere for a purpose and tried to connect or enjoyed with everyone.
" Adopt the place of nature. Her secret is patience. "
                      - Ralph Waldo Emerson.

In this quotation he is talking about Adopt the place of nature because it gives us pleasure, happiness, patience and eternal peace. With this caption we can also understand that how much is nature important for our existence and for everything.

" We always have to grateful and be kind to our nature. "

I would like to conclude by saying that our trip to Victoria nature park was amazing one. Though, it was an educational one but we learned about so many things. Besides these we all spend such a quality time together. We enjoyed every little movement that we will remember it for our life time memory.

That was a best day for all of us. We will never forget. Truly, I want to say that it was a memorable day for all of us.one thing I knew that how to learn with fun. Because both the things are necessary. I would always love to visit such kind of places with everyone.

THANK YOU!!!

Bridge course : Wordsworth's Preface to Lyrical Ballads

"Wordsworth's Preface to Lyrical Ballads. ":-

Hello readers! Here I am going to write down an another blog on william wordsworth's preface to lyrical ballads. This blog is inspired by Dr. Dilip sir barad as a part of thinking activity. In this blog, I am sharing my understanding about this topic. I am answering to some allotted questions on the basis of my learning and knowledge.

  About william Wordsworth :-

William wordsworth ( 7 April - 1770 to 23 April 1850 ) was an English romantic poet. He was one of the founders of English romanticism and one it's most central figures and important intellects. He is remembered as a poet of spiritual and epistemological speculation, a poet concerned with the human relationship to nature. William wordsworth is best known for his " Lyrical Ballads. "

Now, Let's discuss about William wordsworth's preface to Lyrical Ballads.

The " Preface to the Lyrical Ballads. " Is an essay, composed by William wordsworth, for the second edition ( published in January 1801 , and often referred to as the 1800 Edition). It has come to be seen as a de Factomanifesto of the romantic movement.

The four important guidelines of the menifesto include :-

 1. Ordinary life is the best subject for poetry. and the best example for that is 'The solitary Reaper. ' ( poem)

 2. Wordsworth used common man's language.

 3. Everyday language is best suited for poetry.

 4. Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of emotion that recollected in tranquility.

His essay " Preface to Lyrical Ballads " by William wordsworth begins with a discussion of the collection of poems, written mostly by wordsworth with contributions by S. T. Coleridge. It was originally published in the year 1798. He felt his poems were of a new theme and style. and he felt that they needed an introduction.

According to some scholars, Coleridge wanted to write the preface, but never got around it. So, the work fell upon wordsworth. and this is how he has written " Preface to the Lyrical Ballads. "

Question 1 : What is the basic difference between the poetic creed of classicism and Romanticism?

Answer : In this question, we have to differentiate Classicism and Romanticism. This is a very pertinent question.

Classicism and Romanticism these two are not only different ages in the history of English literature. But, these are two ideologies. First we have to understand both of these ideologies and than we have to compare it with each other.

Classicism :-

Classicism is an art style and as the first theory of art was defined by the ancient Greeks, emulated by the romans. and then continued to appear on various forms across the centuries.

Both ancient Greek and ancient Romans writers stressed Restraint reason reflected in theme and structure, and a unity of purpose and design.

In short , we can say that classicism is a term used to describe literature that reflected the thoughts and ideas from Ancient Greece and roman. Classicism sometimes also called as  Neo - classicism.

 Romanticism :-

Romanticism is a literary movement.  Romanticism ( also known as the Romantic movement or Romantic era). Was an artistic, literary, musical and intellectual movement that originated in Europe towards the end of the 18th century. Romanticism was characterized by its emphasis on emotion and individualism.

The early period of the Romantic era was a time of war, with the French Revolution. we can say that " A NEW BEGINNING ARISES IN THE AGE OF ROMANTICISM. "

In the literature, Romanticism found recurrent themes  in the evocation  of sensibility.

During the French Revolution happens in Romantic age or era,  " Liberty, Equality, and fraternity became slogan for all.. ''

Now let's compare both  of these ages or ideologies with each other that In what way they how they differ..

In classicism  -  Intellect is the guiding force of the poetry. While In Romanticism - Imagination is the guiding force of the Poetry. So this is the one difference that we can notice.

Another Important difference we find in classicism and Romanticism is that restrained the poetry. While In romanticism we will not be able to find any kind of restrictions. They believed in liberty means freedom. Romantic poets believed that A poet is free to express everything the way he likes.

During classicism or we can say classical age city life or urban life was Presented in the works of art. While, In the Romantic age or romanticism we can find that rustic life was presented. It is the life of rural people which attract them the most. They sang the glory of rural people.

Romantic poetry is subjective. But, classical poets believed in objectivity. So, these all are the points in which they differ from each other.

Now I am placing one video here so, that By watching that you can get better idea about The Difference between classicism and Romanticism..

Question 2 : Why does wordsworth say 'what ' is poet? rather than 'who' is poet?

Answer : In this question, we have to understand william wordsworth's definition of a ' poet.' We have one question that why william wordsworth used 'what' instead of 'who. '

Generally, when we want to ask something we always use - 'Who. ' But as we all know that here willam wordsworth asked  " What is a poet? " and he defined the word poet in a very interesting way.

" In preface to Lyrical Ballads " Wordsworth explained & expressed his thoughts and opinions about a poet.

     He defines poet as :-

   1.  A Poet is a man of more comprehensive soul.

  2. A poet is different from others.

  3.  He has a greater knowledge of human nature.

  4. The poet is a man speaking to men.

   According to William wordsworth :-

A poet is pleased with his own passions and volitions. He has a great imaginative power The poet's curiosity and interest in life is intense. Poet's soul is very powerful and creative.

Wordsworth also defined that a " A poet must be one of the common human beings." He should feel what others also feel. and according to that he should describe the common feelings in his work.

So, we can say that willing wordsworth elaborately describe the poet in his Essay - " Preface to Lyrical Ballads. " Wordsworth avoids classical tendencies and adopts romantic attitude.

I would like to conclude my answer by saying that If wordsworth had not used What instead of Who , we can never understand these qualities of a poet.

Question 3 : What is poetic diction? Which sort of  poetic diction is suggested by Wordsworth in his preface?

Answer : If we simply want to define poetic diction is " A choice of words , which lends to a unique style for particular poet or author. "

" Poetic diction is the term used to refer to the linguistic style, the vocabulary and the  metaphors used in the writing of  poetry. "

  " Wordsworth's poetic diction :"

    William wordsworth 's poetic diction is a revolution against classical diction. He believed that in poetry ;

" A language totally has a new style and new form. "

He wants that his poetry can be Understandable by all. In his theory of poetic diction wordsworth ' s main focus was only on language. He uses a language that is " Really used by common man. "

He was a romantic poet and he wants that the style, diction, themes and the subject of poetry was totally different from the previous writers.

In the theory of poetic diction , he explains in detail his aim of poetic diction with certain points.

1.  Simple  language

2 . Low and rustic life

3. Common man

4.  Nature

5. Emotions

6. Understandable by all.

William wordsworth also have three important principles of poetic diction.

  1. The language of poetry should be the language " Really used by men. " There is not any kind of artificiality in that. It should be a selection of such language.

  2. It should be the language of men in a state of vivid sensation. It shop have a certain colouring of Imagination.

 3. There is no essential difference between the words used in prose and in metrical composition.

So, these are the very three important principles he gave to us in his theory of poetic diction.

  There was ome controversy between Wordsworth and his good, one time friend Coleridge. " In Biographia Literia" 1817 there is an extensive session On Coleridge 's disagreement with wordsworth's poetic diction. He questioned that ;

" My dear friend what do you actually mean by language really used by men? "

By Implying that - " People who lived in city are not real men? "

  Wordsworth has answers in his preface. He believed that ;

" A humbleness in rustic life and country side life. "

So, from all this points we can say that this sort of poetic diction he suggested in his preface.
