Hello readers! Here, I am going to present my views on John Dryden's poem - "Absalom & Achitophel. " This blog is inspired by Dr. Dilip sir barad. In this particular blog I am answering to some alloted questions on the basis of my understanding about this poem. This blog is a part of our thinking activity.
About John Dryden :-
John Dryden ( 1631 - 1700) was an English poet, literary critic, translator and playwright who was appointed England's first poet laureate in 1668. He is seen as dominating the literary life of Restoration England to such a point that the period came to be known in literary circles as the Age of Dryden. Romanticist writer - sir Walter Scott called him " Glorious John." Dryden - the poet is best known today as a satirist. John Dryden also considered as the " Father of English criticism. "
" Absalom & Achitophel :-
" Absalom and Achitophel " is a satirical poem written by John Dryden. It is generally acknowledged as the finest political satire in the English language. John Dryden has written this poem in heroic couplet. This poem first published in the year - 1681. It is also describe as an allegory regarding contemporary political events, and a mock heroic narrative. This poem is a literature of Restoration era / period.
In this poem two events were presented.
1. The Exclusion Bill / crisis
2. The Popish plot
This poem written in Iambic pentameter. It has AABB rhyming scheme. This poem is narrated by an Omniscient narrator.
" Omniscient narrator means third person narration who knows what is happening at all points of the story at all times. This narrator knows the thoughts and feelings of all the characters in the story. "

Introduction of the poem by John Dryden.
Character study of the poem.
Question 1:- What is satire? Is ' Absalom and Achitophel ' a political satire? Give your logical reasons.
Answer :- To answer this particular question, First we have to understand about the definition of satire.
Satire means - "A way of criticizing people or ideas in a humours way, in order to make a political point, or a piece of writing that uses this style."
John Dryden states that ;
" The true end of satire is the amendment of vices by correction. "
" John Dryden was a great exponent of satire. "
Literary characteristics of satire :-
1. Literary form of Expression.
2. Disgust at the ugly and Foolishness.
3. Humour
4. A sincere desire to correct them.
5. To correct or reform.
" Aim of satire :-"
The satire can be written on any topic because its main ' aim to reform the Follies and vices in our society. ' The satire of John Dryden and Alexander pope was more personal for it was an age of political controversies. Literature of that time was closely associated to Politics. As earlier I have mentioned that ' Absalom and Achitophel ' is a political satire. While sir was talking about satire, he told one thing to us that I want to mention here;
" Satire is good if only it is against power. "
" Absalom and Achitophel as a political satire :- "
As we all know that John Dryden's Poem - ' Absalom and Achitophel considered as the finest Political satire in English language. But, Let us try to understand with some logical reasons that how it is a political satire?
During this Period, there were several political parties in England. Among them Whig and Tory were common. Whig was protestant and against the king. Tory was Catholic and supporter of king. As the relation between these two parties was not good. So, when they expressed anything through their writing for opposite party they used Satire. As a Poet - John Dryden used Satire in his poem in a good way.
John Dryden wrote this poem on king's demand. Through this poem, Dryden lampooned means - " Publicly criticize something or someone by using humour and sarcasm ". the whigs and Earl of Shaftesbury. However he didn't use harsh criticism for James Scott, Duke of Monmouth. This poem veils it's political satire under the transparent disguise of a Biblical story. Also we can say that this poem perfectly depicts the existing crisis and political issues of the modern or contemporary society.
Absalom was Persuaded by Achitophel to rebel against his Father.

Achitophel Symbolizes " Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury. "
John Dryden using the biblical story. He satirizes Achitophel and also those people who were on his side and following him.
Dryden wants to tell the king that Absalom was not feeling guilty because the person who tempted him and who inflamed the will of rebellion in him was Earl of Shaftesbury. - ' Achitophel Or we can say Ahitophel. ' This poem also satirized king but not in harsh words. He criticized the king by saying that " His many slaves and many wives. "
So, From all this points we can conclude that John Dryden 's " Absalom and Achitophel " remains the greatest political satire in English literature. The reason for that it's because of true depiction of the Follies and vices that prevails in our society.
Question 2 :- Write a note on " Temptation" scene in John Dryden's poem Absalom and Achitophel.
Answer :- In Dryden's poem we can understand that Absalom - the illegitimate son of king was prompted and tempted by Achitophel to fight for the throne and take over the throne from king David, Who is Absalom's father. With studied Flattery and art Achitophel begins a long temptation speech to seduce Absalom to this rebellious cause.
This temptation scene even resembles in John Milton's " Paradise Lost. " We can compare the character of Achitophel with the Satan of milton's paradise lost. Here, In our present poem - Achitophel who is allegorically Anthony Ashley Cooper tempts Absalom to take over the throne from his father, so that king David does not give the throne to king James, who is king David's brother.
He exaggerated the qualities of Absalom by saying that ;
" The young - mens vision, and the old mens dream! "
Thee, saviour, Thee, the nations - vows confess. "
He compares Absalom with God. Achitophel makes Absalom blind for power and that is why he rebels against his father. Absalom's lust for power and disobedience towards his father brings his fall. His innocence is lost because he was tempted by Achitophel. It was no one but only Achitophel who urges Absalom to ;
" Commit a pleasing rape upon the crown. "
We can also understand that the main Or central theme of the poem is :- ' Temptation, Sin, Fall and Punishment.'
Question 3 :- Write a detailed note on the character sketch of King David.
Answer :- As we all know that Characters are very much important. and we have to remember as well. Here, In this poem John Dryden has depicted all the major and minor characters very well. First we will see here the name of the characters and their Allegorical presentation by John Dryden in this poem.
Detailed Character Sketch Of king David :-
The third king of Israel. David is a merciful and kind king who does not have a male heir to inherit the throne. As such, the crown will ascend down " a Collateral line" after David's death to his brother. As Johm Dryden mentioned in the poem that " his many wives and many Slaves. " So, it is very Obvious that he also has several illegitimate sons. But king David loves absalom the most and he became king David's Favourite son. He gives absalom everything that he wants.
By the time, however David's dishonest Counselor Achitophel begins to stir up resentment for David and encourages his son Absalom to rise up against his own father to ensure the thing that David's brother who was King James will not ascend the throne. Both Absalom and Achitophel confuse David's mild nature for Weakness.
King David is one of the important character in John Dryden's poem - " Absalom and Achitophel. " Dryden does not depict as king David perfect. On the Contrary, Dryden is Critical of charles 's leniency and even pokes fun at his rumored promiscuity. But, Dryden nevertheless implies that king Charles has been chosen by God to be the king of England, end that right can not be appropriated by Parliament of the people.

" Frankenstein " Or " The modern Prometheus " is an 1818 novel written by English Author - ' Mary shelley. ' Frankenstein tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, - a young scientists who creates a sapient creature. (sapient means - " Wise or attempting to appear wise.) "
He had done Scientific experiment. Mary shelley started writing the story when she was only 18 years. The first edition was published anonymously in London on 1st January, 1818. Her name first appeared in the second edition, which was published in Paris in the year of 1821.
In the year 1816, Mary, Percy and Lord Byron had a competition to see that who could write the best horror story. After thinking for days, Mary shelley was inspired to write ' Frankenstein' after imagining a scientist who created life and was horrified by his own creation.
" Various Film Adaptations on Mary shelley 's Frankenstein ":-
In an Age of Adaptations, we can say that there are so many film adaptations available on Mary shelley's classic genre Novel. Her gothic novel - " Frankenstein" is a story that constantly being retold. There are so many adaptations based on this novel in various languages. I am putting a small list of movies which are based on Mary shelley's novel. So that you can easily understand.

" Mary shelley 's Frankenstein " is a 1994 science fiction horror film directed by ' Kenneth Branagh. ' It is considered as the most faithful film adaptations of shelley's 1818 novel. Despite several differences and additions in plot from the novel, the film follows a medical student named - victor Frankenstein who creates a new life in the form of a monster composed of various corpses' body parts.

The film had its World premiere on November 3, 1994 at the London film festival.
" Movie Screening "
On 1st August - Monday we had a movie Screening on Mary Shelley' s Frankenstein arranged by yesha Ma'am at Department of English. Here I am discussing about some important points which I have note down while watching the movie.
In the movie we can see that our Hero Or we can say protagonist - Victor Frankenstein was from geneva. As the movie goes on we came to know about his concept that - " No one should ever die. "
He developed that concept after the death of his mother. He wanted to do something different and that is why he preserved different body parts and was making one creature. Victor was doing all kinds of Experiments in the lab.
Elizabeth ( Victor Frankenstein' s adoptive sister & fiancee) comes to see him. After creating a creature, Victor felt very bad and guilty that what he had made because the creature's look was very much ugly and he himself became horrified on his own creation & became ill.
Elizabeth visited for second time to see Frankenstein. As Creature's look was ugly and awful Victor abandoned him very badly. So, he went to one old man's house. That old man was blind and that is why he cannot see the creature's appearance. But, when his grandchild came and he saw the creature's look he started to beat him very badly. The creature cried & felt bad upon this that he tried to help that family & still they were beating me.
After all this thing happened, Monster thought about taking revenge. First he killed william ( Victor's younger brother) and after that on the wedding night of Elizabeth & Victor Frankenstein he came and killed Elizabeth also. He told to Victor that; " She was very beautiful. " But Victor became angry and replied him that ;
" She was mine; not yours. '
In Victor's Journal his last lines were -"My experiments are dead now. " When he died monster was crying sitting behind next to him. Because after all he was the creator. They both died in the last.
" Similarities between the novel & Movie :-"
There are some similarities which we can observed in the novel and movie. They are given as below:-
- In novel and movie, the entire story revolves around two main lives :- 1.Victor Frankenstein 2. Creature
- The monster kills innocent people without any concern of morality.
- In both the versions means Novel & film Victor Frankenstein wants to destroy the creature.
- In the same way Creature also wants to take revenge to dear ones of Frankenstein.
- Victor Frankenstein's health getting worse after creating the creature.
Particular scene Which I liked the most:-
A scene which I liked the most from the entire movie is that when Victor Frankenstein died, Monster was crying sitting behind next to him. The reason for my liking that scene is because monster felt bad that his creator is dead now. Whatever happened but if we tried to look apart from that, we can understand that the creator of his life has gone now and there was no any reason for him to live. Victor Frankenstein abandoned him because of his ugly look, because of the fear of society. But still monster felt bad upon the death of his creator and he cried. They both died in the last.
So, we can conclude by saying that there are so many similarities as well as Differences between the novel & the movie. But Everyone should watch this movie at least once so that they can understand about so many aspects.

As a part of this creative - critical thinking, Here I am going to present an essay on a controversial topic that we all are dealing with it in our present time. I tried my best to do in this task and also tried to put elements of Allegory & parody.
Topic :- " Boycott a Film "
We all are living in a trend where everyone is Boycotting a film. We are very much aware about this. Almost all new Bollywood releases are facing relentless social media campaigns calling for their boycott. Right now boycotting the film it's like becoming a trend. Everyone will take that matter so easily. But we have to think about this that why viewers are spending less on Bollywood films. The popular perception behind is that the industry is losing its connection with the current generation of movie watchers.
Currently, boycott trends are going on in a full swing against films like - Laal singh Chadha and Rakshabandhan. Boycott is scaring Bollywood.
We can compare this Boycott trend with a Boy's refusal to a girl for marriage that how can he say no without meeting a girl? Also people are continuously comparing Tom Hanks & Aamir khan.They don't like Aamir khan in compared to Tom Hanks. Everyone found Aamir khan's acting a bit over in his movie - Laal singh Chadha. But still there are some other reasons also for Boycotting a film. In a satirical way fans are saying that films are already not doing well and people have stopped watching films. So what's the need to boycott them in a separate way?
Question 3 : Discuss the character of Mr. Darcy ( Man with pride, male - ego) Reserved, Introvert, observer, silent lover, superiority complex and a true lover.
Answer : " Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy :-"
Fitzwilliam Darcy Esquire, generally referred to as Mr. Darcy is one of the central character of the novel. He is also the protagonist of the novel. He is an archetype of the aloof romantic hero, and a romantic interest of Elizabeth bennet.
Now let's try to understand Mr. Darcy's character with the help of certain points. They are given as below.
1. The hero of the novel :-
Mr. Darcy is the hero of the novel. He is twenty - seven, tall and handsome and of a stately appearance. Like Elizabeth he is one of the intricate characters of the novel. Mr. Darcy's character is like ;
" Reserved, Fastidious and Introvert personality. "
If we compare Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy we came to know that Bingley was sure of being liked by everyone wherever he appeared. Darcy was continuously giving offence. Mr. Darcy's exterior is certainly very grim. He looked so stern. He is truly the hero of the novel. The entire novel follows the character of Mr. Darcy, along with Elizabeth.
2. A Man with pride :-
We can observe Mr. Darcy's character - "A Man with pride " From the moment he makes his appearance. He declined being introduced to any other lady in the ball party and he keeps quite most of the evening . He himself thinks that he is reserved. In one of the chapters in the novel, he said to Elizabeth that ;
" I certainly have not the talent which some people possess of conversing easily with those whom I have never seen before.... "
But we can not decline the fact that Mr. Darcy is a proud man. In third chapter of the novel, he refused to dance with Elizabeth by saying that;
" She is tolerable ; but not handsome enough to tempt me. "
In the novel, when Mr. Darcy makes his first proposal to Elizabeth, his tone is very proud and haughty. So, from these points we can understand the character of Mr. Darcy - a man with full pride. He also represents " Pride" Jane Austen's novel.
3. Introvert personality of Mr. Darcy :-
In pride and prejudice novel, Mr. Darcy 's personality is introvert. He doesn't like to talk with everyone. He also doesn't like social gatherings. His introversion in the novel is quite clear from the beginning of the novel. After the ball party where his reserve is evident - jane reports ;
" Miss Bingley told me... that he never speaks much unless among his intimate acquaintance. "
He also feel uncomfortable dancing with people. He does not have prior acquaintance with his character like;
" Socially awkward, arrogant and terrible at being romantic. "
So, from all these points which we have discussed. We came to know that Mr. Darcy's personality is introvert. He can not easily mixup with everyone.
4. Mr. Darcy - A True Lover :-
We can consider Mr. Darcy's character as a True lover. He is really a true lover. Elizabeth 's eyes features which attracts Darcy the most. He praised her. He also gald to see Jane and Elizabeth when they returned home after jane has recovered from her illness. Why he is glad to see her , because he loves Elizabeth. When lydia ran away with wickham at that time he also helped in finding them.
Mr. Darcy had done all this things for Elizabeth because he truly loves her. When he proposed her second time he said that...
" I would have to tell you that you have bewitched me body and soul and I love, and love... I love you.... "
" I never wish to be parted from you from this day. "
So, we can say that In last they both realized their love for each other. and we can conclude that Mr. Darcy is a True lover.
5. His pride corrected by love :-
Mr. Darcy falls in love with Elizabeth in this novel. It strikes him first of all, that her face is rendered uncommonly intelligent by the beautiful expression of her dark eyes. He is also caught by her light and pleasing figure and the easy playfulness of her manners. He gets an opportunity to observe her closely at Netherfield where she has gone to nurse the ailing jane. Mr. Darcy impressed by her perspicacity, her intellectual sharpness and her sparkling but inoffensive wit.
In Elizabeth's angry refusal of his proposal that marks the beginning of the great change in him. We can see in the novel that after Lydia's elopement with Wickham, he saves the family from disgrace. and also helped them in finding Lydia. All this he does out of his true love for Elizabeth. So we can say that ;
" Mr. Darcy's pride corrected by his love for Elizabeth. "
In last I would like to conclude my answer by saying that Mr. Darcy exhibits all the good and bad qualities of the ideal English aristocrat - snobbish and arrogant. He is also completely honest and sure of himself. The entire novel presented the character development of Mr. Darcy.
Question 2 : Discuss the character of Elizabeth Bennet.
Answer :- Elizabeth Bennet is the protagonist in pride and prejudice novel. She is often referred to as Eliza or Lizzy by her family and friends. Elizabeth is the second child in a family of five daughters. Of all her ( means Jane Austen's heroines) she liked Elizabeth most. She once wrote to her niece;
" I must confess that I think her as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print, and how I shall be able to tolerate those who do not like her at least I do not know. "
Let's try to understand the character sketch of Elizabeth Bennet with certain points.
1. Headstrong women :-
Miss Elizabeth Bennet's personality is expressed through out of the novel. She is an intelligent and headstrong flair. She is a very firm believer in independence as well as marrying for love, and that's reflects her intelligence. She is seen as a very different from her other sisters in the family. Elizabeth is the representation of " Prejudice " in the novel. She is a strong character. She has her own desires.
When Mrs. Bennet pressures Lizzy to marry mr. Colins. She is not willing to compromise her morals. Her bond with her father is very strong. But she is obstinate and a headstrong women in jane Austen's novel.
" There is a stubbornness about me that never can bear to be frightened at the will of others. "
Through this quotation Jane Austen wants to convey about Elizabeth's obstinate and headstrong personality.
2. An Intricate character :-
Pride and prejudice novel represents an antithesis between ' Intricacy & simplicity'. Elizabeth Bennet is one of the intricate means complex character. She is profound and perspective. There is a good deal of intellectual complexity about her. When she is reject by Darcy for a dance at a ball party ;
" Her pride is mortified by his, and she gets prejudice against him. "
She is percipient, hence subject to failures of perception and this is what accounts for the intricacy in her character.
3. Her physical charam :-
Though Elizabeth Bennet is certainly not as beautiful as her sister jane, but still she is graceful and charming. There is something so elusive and Indefinable about her charm that it defines all analysis. Her beauty takes a little time to register, but she is the type of woman whom familiarity and not distance lends charm. Mr. Darcy does not concede her any appreciable beauty when he first meets her. He said ;
" She is not handsome enough to tempt me. "
4. Mature and honest :-
Elizabeth bennet is a mature and also an honest one. We can understand that In the ball party, except for jane and Elizabeth other three sisters behaved very weirdly. So we can say In that way Elizabeth is mature one. Maturity reflects in her character. Also she told very clearly what she felt. She judges things for herself and she is capable of decisive actions. She calmly and yet firmly expressed her opinions. She stands up to her mother mrs. Bennet over Mr. Collins proposal. So, this how she stands for herself. From all this points we came to know that she is the mature and honest one.
5. Her warm Heartedness:-
Another quality of Elizabeth bennet to impress is her warm heartedness. The concern which she shows for her sister jane, during her stay at Netherfield, the way she walks all the way to Netherfield speaks well of her sister. She went there because she was concern about her sister. Also we can understand that she felt concerned at Mr. Bingley 's removal from the neighborhood. and also became genuinely very happy when jane is engaged to him.
So, from this points we can understand that Elizabeth bennet is a warm hearted woman. She loved her family and her sisters.
I would like to conclude my answer by saying that - Elizabeth Bennett is a lovable heroine indeed. Of all jane Austen's heroines, she impresses us and delights us the most. Elizabeth is smart, Lively and attractive. She prides herself on her ability to analyze other people and the entire novel describes the character development of - " Elizabeth. "

"About the novel :-"
" Pride and prejudice " - a popular and romantic novel written by Jane Austen. It was published in the year 1813. The entire novel follows the character development of ' Elizabeth Bennet'. This novel published anonymously in three volumes. It contains total 61 chapters.
" Pride and prejudice " remains Jane Austen's most brilliant novel. The one with
'' the most exciting story and the Wittiest and most spirited heroine.''

Question 1 : Which version of the novel is more appealing? Novel or Film (adaptation ) why?
Answer :- To understand this question, we have to first describe both the aspects that which one is more better ( Novel or Film adaptations) why?
It seems that books are better than movies. Of course, It depends a lot on who you ask because some may have another opinion for that. In fact everyone have their own point of view about this. Many people consider the fact that most of the people specially teenagers these days prefer to watch a movie rather than to read a book.
" Reading has incredible benefits. "
It helps us in our mental development. It makes us better people. Now comparing a book Or novel with its movie adaptations is a different thing. Here I am going to give reference about the film adaptations of this novel.. Which are given below.
1. Pride & prejudice ( 1995)
" Pride and prejudice " Is a six episode 1995 British television Drama, adapted by Andrew Davies from jane Austen's 1813 novel of the same name.
2. Bride & prejudice ( 2004)
A modern Adaptation of jane Austen's novel pride and prejudice that features the lives of four unmarried daughters in an Indian family.
3. Pride & prejudice ( 2005)
This is the adaptation that got all the hearts swooning and made Jane Austen popular with the younger crowd with amazing cinematography and music, along with the ever charming ' keira knightely' and ' Matthew Macfayden. ' The tension and the hate / love relationship is brought out splendidly in the movie.
According to me , Novel is more appealing rather than movie. Because, the main reason behind that is movie only gave us an outlook view. While, reading gave us the entire view. we can get the better and detail explanation about everything, from reading. so my opinion is that first read an original text and than Watch a movie.but, if we only prefer to Watch a movie that's not done. First we have to read the original text. It always helped us in many ways, that What writer wants to tell us.
After reading a novel you can go for a movie. So that you can compare both with each other . When a Director made films based on any particular novel, he / she do some kinds of changes in making a film. So we can compare and also tell this things to other people. I like to read an original text rather than gave first preference to watch a movie.

Answer :- All of Jane Austen's novels are set against the background of daily life in English Georgian society at the turn of the 19th century.
In Jane Austen's novels all her characters are set. Answer:- If I were director or screenplay writer I would definitely make some kind of changes in movie. Like I omitted some of the scenes which I found very melo - dramatic. Because everytime you don't like melodrama or any melodramatic scenes.
While reading a particular scene in the book, where to provide separation to Mr. Bingley and Jane, Mrs. Bennett ask her daughters to leave the room with her. But, Due to their curiosity they tried to listen the conversation behind the door. Now, In this particular scene the ' picturization' make us laugh, rather than ' narration. '

Answer :- The particular scene from the movie which I liked the most is the ending scene. In which, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy both realized their love for each other. The reason that why I liked only that particular scene from the entire movie is that they both forget about their pride and prejudice and realized their love. This same thing happened with all of us in our life that suddenly we realized something that whatever we were doing was wrong and than try to correct it. So, we can say that;
"Realization is a good thing. "
So, that's all I have to say about my favourite scene from the movie.
Question 8:- Compare the narrative strategy of novel and movie.
Answer :- Novel :- " Pride & prejudice " Was written by British author jane Austen. The main character is Elizabeth Bennett and thr story follows Elizabeth and her family as they deal with issues such as marriage & social class. The Bennett family is out of the landed gentry, they have money but are not insanely rich. The novel is also a love story between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. Elizabeth's pride keeps her from seeing Mr. Darcy as anything except the negative first Impression. While Mr. Darcy's prejudice towards Elizabeth's lower class blinds him to her many good qualities.
Movie:- The 2005 movie starred keira Knightley and Matthew Macfayden. The movie was filmed in England. Originally, the movie was going to be very true to the book. All the dialogues was kept the same and almost the entire movie was going to be from the perspective of Elizabeth. The movie was well received by critics. Austen fans and British viewers of the film had divided opinions.
Comparison:- The movie has other differences than just the dialogue. The movie also portrays Mr. Bennett as a warmer, more sympathetic father than he is in the book. His relationship with his wife is much more loving in the movie. The novel ends with the marriage but the In the movie we can see the ending part as a intimate scene of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth. So this is the way I compared the narrative style of novel and movie.
