His Major Poems :-
American Poet Robert Frost has written many poems. But , Here are some major ones.
• ' The Road not taken '
• ' Stopping by Woods on a snowy Evening'
• ' Fire and Ice '
• ' Birches '
• ' The Mending wall '
• ' Nothing Gold can stay '
Here we are only Concerned with one of the famous Poem by Robert Frost that I am going to discuss it about in detail. The name of the poem is - ' Birches.'
' Birches ' :-
When I see birches bend to left and right
Across the lines of straighter darker trees,
I like to think some boy’s been swinging them.
But swinging doesn’t bend them down to stay
As ice-storms do. Often you must have seen them
Loaded with ice a sunny winter morning
After a rain. They click upon themselves
As the breeze rises, and turn many-colored
As the stir cracks and crazes their enamel.
Soon the sun’s warmth makes them shed crystal shells
Shattering and avalanching on the snow-crust—
Such heaps of broken glass to sweep away
You'd think the inner dome of heaven had fallen.
They are dragged to the withered bracken by the load,
And they seem not to break; though once they are bowed
So low for long, they never right themselves:
You may see their trunks arching in the woods
Years afterwards, trailing their leaves on the ground
Like girls on hands and knees that throw their hair
Before them over their heads to dry in the sun.
But I was going to say when Truth broke in
With all her matter-of-fact about the ice-storm
I should prefer to have some boy bend them
As he went out and in to fetch the cows—
Some boy too far from town to learn baseball,
Whose only play was what he found himself,
Summer or winter, and could play alone.
One by one he subdued his father's trees
By riding them down over and over again
Until he took the stiffness out of them,
And not one but hung limp, not one was left
For him to conquer. He learned all there was
To learn about not launching out too soon
And so not carrying the tree away
Clear to the ground. He always kept his poise
To the top branches, climbing carefully
With the same pains you use to fill a cup
Up to the brim, and even above the brim.
Then he flung outward, feet first, with a swish,
Kicking his way down through the air to the ground.
So was I once myself a swinger of birches.
And so I dream of going back to be.
It’s when I’m weary of considerations,
And life is too much like a pathless wood
Where your face burns and tickles with the cobwebs
Broken across it, and one eye is weeping
From a twig’s having lashed across it open.
I'd like to get away from earth awhile
And then come back to it and begin over.
May no fate willfully misunderstand me
And half grant what I wish and snatch me away
Not to return. Earth’s the right place for love:
I don’t know where it's likely to go better.
I'd like to go by climbing a birch tree,
And climb black branches up a snow-white trunk
Toward heaven, till the tree could bear no more,
But dipped its top and set me down again.
That would be good both going and coming back.
One could do worse than be a swinger of birches.
Introduction of the Poem :-
'Birches' is a poem written by American poet Robert Frost. First published in the August 1915 issue of The Atlantic Monthly together with ' The Road not Taken ' and ' The sound of Trees ' as a Group of poems. ' It was included in Robert Frost 's third collection of poetry - ' Mountain Interval ' which was published in the year 1916.This poem consisting of 59 lines. It is one of Robert Frost 's most anthologized poems. Along with other poems that deal with rural landscape and wildlife. This poem shows Robert Frost as a nature poet.
Analysis of the Poem :-
In this Poem named :- ' Birches' , The narrator evokes a strong urge or we can say nostalgia of his early childhood days. The mood of the poem is an imaginative and a dreamy one. Nature also Plays a substantial role in the Poem. The poem uses the natural world and seemingly everyday events as a vehicle to explore the human experience.
Originally , this poem was called 'Swinging Birches ' . One of Frost's early works published in the year - 1916. A title of the poem perhaps more accurately depicting the subject.
In writing this Poem Robert Frost was inspired by his childhood experience with swinging in Birches which were a popular children 's game during his time. In this poem we can understand two visual perspectives.
1. Birch trees as bend by boy 's playful swinging.
2. Bend by Ice storms.
' The Birches bend across the lines of straighter darker eyes. '
This line in the Poem subtly introduce the theme of Imagination and well opposing darker realities. The visual image of the bend birches causes the narrator to speculate about how the tree became that way. He prefers the idea of the boy swinging in the birch trees thus arching its branches. But, he is forced to acknowledge the truth that the bends are caused permanently by the ice storms.
The narrator admits that he used to be a
'Swinger of birches ' and would like to be one again. He would like to abandon the cares of adulthood and become a boy once again. By Climbing a birch tree thus the poet wants to experiencing once again the carefree attitudes of youth. The narrator also regrets that he can no longer find his peace of mind by swinging on birches. It is because he is an adult and because of that he is unable to leave his responsibilities behind and climb toward heaven until he can start Fresh on the earth.
It is also significant that the narrator 's desire to escape from the rationality is inconclusive. He wants to escape as a boy climbing towards heaven , but he also wants to return to the earth. So Both ' Going and coming back.' However our narrator would like to get away from earthly responsibilities. The freedom of imagination is wondrous and appealing but the narrator still can not avoid returning to the truth and his responsibilities on the ground. Thus we can understand that escape is only a temporary one.
This poem ends on a lighter note stating that ;
' One could do worse than being a swinger of birches.'
• Central idea of the Poem :-
The Central idea of the poem Birches is the interrelationship between reality & Imagination. The poet knows very well that the bending of birches can only be brought by an ice Storm. Moreover, this poem is about Truth. The narrator cannot avoid returning to the truth and responsibilities of the ground. He wishes for a temporary escape but not for permanent.
Birches poem also captures the nostalgic memory of a countryside boy and Fuses it into worldly wisdom of the grown up man he has become.
Themes of the Poem :-
While Discussing about Robert Frost 's poem - Birches we can also noticed some of the major and important themes which are given as below. So Let us disscus these themes in detail.
1. Youth :-
The very first and important theme of this poem is - Youth. The poem is full of allusions to the childhood experiences of the poet and imagined boys. The poet seems weary of this world and wants to return to his childhood days once again and leaving behind the responsibilities and duties of the Present day. This is a common theme in the poem. Robert Frost is most probably influenced by them.
2. Reality V/s. Imagination :-
The second important theme of this poem is - Reality v/s. imagination. From the very Beggining of the Poem , the poet starts imagining the possible causes of the bending of the birch trees. Then he goes to Imagine lots of other things also. Towards the latter portion of the poem he expresses his desire to go away from this world , tired of his duties and responsibilities. But after this initial escapist attitude , the poet understands the reality that no one can escape from reality for a longer period of time.
One has to come back to the world. Although we can escape into our Fancy or Imagination for some time. So Reality V/s. Imagination can be seen as one the main theme of this poem.
3. Nostalgia :-
The theme of nostalgia is very strong in the poem. After seeing the birch trees bending down , the poet likes to think that it has been mischief of some rural new England boys with whom it has been the custom to play with the trees in their recreational periods. The poet too has been extremely fond of his own childhood. In the later part of the poem, the poet expresses his desire to go back once again to his childhood to enjoy the silly and little pleasures. So the Poet felt very Nostalgic.
4. Nature :-
' Birches ' by Robert Frost is a nature poem. Robert Frost seems to have a close affinity with nature and his poems are meditative. In this poem Frost has given many different apperances of birches in summer and in winter. The poet uses harsh images of nature to suggest the difficulties and weariness of an adult life. He longs to return to the innocence and beauty of nature.
' I'd like to get from earth awhile
Andthen come back to it and begin over.'
' Nature as a means for Solace and source of Wisdom.'
The Poet presents nature as a means for Solace. He recalls his childhood as a swinger of birches where he would find peace and happiness close to nature. But now as an adult he compares his life as a pathless wood by saying that;
' And life is too much like a Pathless wood.'
So, These all are the Major and important themes of the poem named - Birches.
The Poem - Birches is written in Blank verse. Blank verse is a genre of poetry consisting of a regular rhythm pattern - Iamabic Pentameter but no recurring rhyme scheme.
• Figures of Speech :-
Robert Frost has used a number of Figures of Speech to enrich the quality of language of the poem. These includes Simile , Onomatopoeia, and Personification. Let us try to understand this.
1. Simile :- It is a Figure of Speech in which Similarity between two different objects is explicitly stated using the words - like or as.
For Example :- ' Life is too much like a Pathless wood.'
2. Onomatopoeia :- It is a Figure of Speech in which the sounds of the words convey the sense. An instance of Onomatopoeia can be seen in the Poem when the Ice covered branches strike with each other and produce a clicking sound.
For Example :- ' They Click Upon themselves.'
3. Personification:- It is a Figure of Speech in which an intimate object an abstract concept is endowed with human attributes or feelings. For instance, the poet has used a beautiful Personification to describe the man's desire to quit his Present life and return to childhood.
' Half grant what I wish and Snatch me away.'
So, These are the Figures of Speech Presented in this Poem - ' Birches.'
Hello readers! Here, I am going to write down one another blog. This Particular blog is a bit different from other blogs. This video talks about a brief Introduction of an Existentialism. Everyone believed that It first started with Soren kierkegaard, and Followed by Nietzche, Dostovysky, Heidegger, Jean Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir and Albert Camus. Their views are different from each other. But, Ultimately they talked about Existentialism. In this video we can also understand that Existentialism is a triangle concept which talks about Individuality, Freedom and Passion.
Video 2 :-
This video discussed about what is Absurd reasoning. Through this video we can get idea that when one is feeling low and felt that there was no any point in living a life. It leads towards Sucide. Many People died because they thought their life is not worth living. May be they found it Purposeless and Meaningless.
According to Albert Camus , ' Sucide is an individual act. ' I am totally agree with this concept of Albert Camus that Sucide is an individual act. ' Beggining to think is the Beggining to undermind. ' This video also reminds us of the movie - ' Stay ' which talks about the same concept.
Video 3 :-
Feeling of Absurd is not for all. In this particular video I understood that Albert Camus rejected to being an Existentialist because it suggests that have Faith in God. While , Albert Camus rejected that idea and says that embrace the Absurdity.
Video 4 :-
After the Period of both the World wars People were in so much despair and negativity was also there which gave birth to three main theories - Dadaism, Nihilism and Existentialism. • Why I am here?
• What does it mean to be human ?
• How should I live my life ?
The thought which impressed me from this video is that :- ' Existentialist addressed that what we don't need is a divine Perspective. But, we more need human Perspective. '
According to Nietzsche :- ' Human , all too human . '
This video also talks about Jean Paul Sartre 's statement about ' Existence Precedes Essence' in his essay - ' Existentialism is a Humanism.' video ends with the explanation about difference between Existentialism and Nihilism.

At last , children Pronounced the word Existentialism in a different way. They pronounced like - ' Eggsalentlalism.' or Exatentalum.
Video 9 :-
This video talks about Eric Dodson personal experience of being an Existentialist. He discussed that how Existentialism connected with our daily life. From this Particular video the thought which impressed me thi most is that :- ' Existentialism talks about acceptance. It says that accept the human beings as they are.'
Holism is also one of the major and important part of Existentialism.
Video 10 :-
This video talks about comparison between Existentialism and Essentialism. During Ancient time Plato and Aristotle wrote that everything has essence including us means human beings. Because an essence gives the Purpose to life. We all are born to do such kinds of things. Here two words can be noticed they are :- Being and Become..As we all are Human beings. But what is important is that we all want to become something in our life.

Now I am going to discuss some alloted questions given by Dr. Dilip Barad sir with the reference of Movie screening of The great Gatsby.
Question - 1 :- How did the film capture the Jazz Age, the Roaring Twenties, the Flappers and The Prohibition act of 1920s in America?
Answer :- Fitzgerald has greatly explored Jazz Age in his novel - The Great Gatsby. As we have seen in the movie also that Baz Luhrmann faithfully captured Jazz Age/ Music. So, Let us try to see and Understand each one by one and how faithfully it is Presented or Captured in the movie,Directed by Baz Luhrmann.
☆ Jazz Age :- The Jazz Age is the time Period in the 1920s and 1930s when Jazz music dance gained widespread Popularity throughout the United states. The Jazz Age was a time of economic Prosperity and liberal Social activity.
The 1920s were a very upbeat, celebratory time for the American People. There were wild Parties , bootleggers sneaking alcohol around due to Prohibition and an elevated sense of materialism. People were enjoying the finer things in life , seemingly going through everyday life without a care in the world. This period of time can be referred to as ' The Roaring Twenties as well as The Jazz Age.' In the novel and movie one can see both positive and negative aspects of Jazz Age through several characters, symbols and events.
The Film captures the Jazz Age by showing Gatsby 's luxurious Parties. No one knows that where the money is coming from. As the movie Progresses, we come to know that Gatsby's wealth is coming from share market and bootlegging - the illegal business of liquor. Jazz Age encouraged a lively youth culture focused around the automobile , Jazz music and bootleg liquor.
☆ Flappers :- Flapper, Young woman known for wearing Short dresses and bobbed hair and for embracing freedom from traditional societal constrains. Flappers are Predominantly associated with the late 1910s and 20s in the United states.
Two characters in the novel that exemplify the nature of Flappers. They are Daisy and Jordan Baker. Through their lifestyle and fashion they both emulate all the defining aspects of a 1920s Flapper.
☆ The Prohibition act of America in 1920s :-
The period of Prohibition of alcohol in 1920s and 1930s is often called the most famous and infamous times in the history of United states. Its intention was to reduce alcoholconsumption by elimination of its manufacturers, distributors and sellers. Organized crime was one of the worst effects of Prohibition. It encouraged ordinary citizens to take Part in illegal activities such as bootlegging and consuming alcohol.
The citizens were prone to take part in such illegal activities to make a living and earn money much like Gatsby did. In the movie also we can see that party lovers people can consume alcohol as much as they can.
So, the film captures all this aspects of Jazz Age, Flapper Culture and Prohibition act of America in a very good way.
Question - 2 :- What is the difference between the Film and the novel and write in brief about it.
Answer :- The difference between the novel - ' The Great Gatsby ' and the movie is the Perspective of the author and the Director. So, Let us try to analyse the changes which Baz Luhrmann has done in the movie.
Following are the major changes that made by Filmmaker in his film.
1. The Frame story
2. Relationship between Jordan Baker and Nick carraway
3. Lunch with wolfsheim
4. Gatsby's Death and Funeral
1. The Frame story :- One major difference between the movie and the novel is the beginning. The movie opens up with Nick carraway in sanitarium diagnosed by a doctor of some sort as " Morbidly alcoholic." While, Fitzgerald's Nick refers to be as the man who gives his name to this book. In the movie, Nick first gives the title - 'Gatsby' then adds The 'Great.'
2. Relationship between Jordan & Nick:-
The Relationship between Jordan Baker and Nick carraway also portrayed differently. In the novel they become a couple and breakup near the end of the summer. While, In the movie we can not find any development of their Relationship. Luhrmann 's Nick says he found Jordan ' Frightening ' at first, - a word which Nick carraway does not apply to her in the novel.
□ The Scene of Apartment Party is also different in the novel and the movie.
3. Lunch with wolfsheim :-
In the novel Jay Gatsby takes Nick to lunch where he introduces Nick with Mayer wolfsheim. While, In the movie Gasby and Nick both go to the barber shop in Gatsby's car and meet wolfsheim. The meeting with him also depicted differently.
□ Luhrmann also cut two characters in the movie.
1. Nick carraway 's maid The Finnish woman
2. Ella Kaye
4. Gatsby's Death and Funeral :-
In the novel Gatsby is murdered by George Wilson, the mechanic husband of Tom's mistress. But, Fitzgerald does not depict the murder. In both the forms means In the novel and movie, Gatsby is waiting for a call from Daisy. In the film, Nick calls and Gatsby gets out of the pool when he hears the phone ring. He dies believing that the call was of Daisy. None of that happens in the novel.
Question - 3 :- How did the film help In understanding the symbolic significance of ' The valley of Ashes',' The eyes of T.J.Eckleberg', and ' The Green light ' ?
Answer :-
• The Valley of Ashes :- The valley of Ashes is a symbolic Place in the novel that first appears in chapter 2. It is a place between East and west Egg created by dumping the industrial waste. It represents how morality and social code of conduct are dropped out of the Industrial society.
The valley of Ashes is a highly effective symbol that represents the divide between the Poor and rich class. In the film also, it captured by the filmmaker in a very well way.
• The Eyes of T.J.Eckleberg :-
The Eyes of T.J.Eckleberg are faded bespectacled Eyes Printed on the bill board over the valley of Ashes. The eyes represent thecommercialism which is the backbone of the American dream. It is clear from the fact of how Gatsby earns a lot of wealth to get Daisy back on his life.
These Eyes represent the hollowness and solidity in Gatsby's eyes, for despite having all the glitters in life, his eyes reflect emptiness. To George Wilson, they are the eyes of God that watch every segment of the society.
• The Green light :-
The symbol of Green light Pops up many times in the novel. It represents Gatsby's Dream and hope. The Green light also signifies his memories with Daisy and the gap between his past and Present. Gatsby love to stand at the dock to stare at that green light which represents Jay Gatsby's innermost desire to revive his past.
Gatsby is very much hopeful that one day he will win the lost moments. The symbol of Green light also stands for his artificial and unrealistic aims in Jay Gatsby's life.
Question - 4 :- How did the film capture the theme of racism and Sexism?
Answer:- In the movie - 'The Great Gatsby' The themes of Sexism and racism captured very well. So, Let us try to understand these themes.
■ Theme of Racism :- The theme of racism can be very well defined through the character of Tom Buchanan. He shows this when Nick comes over for dinner one night and Tom makes the comment about " The Rising of Colored Empires".
Tom believes that the white race has to stay strong. His racist ideas fully correspond to the situation in the United states in the 1920s which is reflected in his emphasizing the supremacy of white people. Along with that expressing his fear of the white population to be submerged by the black community.
Tom strongly believed that black people are inferior than white Americans. As a racist person we came to know about the thoughts if Tom Buchanan. In the valley of Ashes, black people were living very poor and painful life, which again In contrast with wealthy and upper class white people like - Tom and Daisy Buchanan, Jay Gatsby etc.
■Theme of Sexism :- Sexism is when the opposite gender discriminates the other gender. It is when People mainly men are being Prejudice, stereotyping or discriminating typically against women on the basis of sex. Tom Buchanan is full of standards which he encourages to other to reach but ironically does not successfully meet up to them. He had this idea that women are looked at as low and weak people where as men are better.
Tom's actions reflects on the way he thinks about women. He does not respect them and as a result,he slaps Myrtle across the face. When Daisy was talking with Nick about her daughter she said that ;
" I hope she will be a fool and that is the best thing a girl can be in this world - a beautiful little fool."
So, the themes of Racism and Sexism Portrayed very well in the film.
Question- 5 :- Discuss Nick Carraway as a Narrator.
Answer :- Nick Carraway is the narrator of the Novel- 'The Great Gatsby'. He was sharing the events of the Novel from the first person Perspective. Nick is the cousin of Daisy Buchanan. Nick narrates the story from the past. He builds a relationship with many of the major characters of the novel but he Prefers to stay out of the dramatic decisions that the wealthy people make. He does develop a personal relationship with Daisy's golfer friend Jordan Baker, but they soon Breakup.
In the very beginning of the Novel, he states;
" In my Younger and more vulnerable Years my father gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since. Whenever You feel like criticizing anyone,he told me,Just Remember that all the People in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had."
At the end of the novel, when Gatsby died only Nick was there for his Funeral. No one else was there,Not even Daisy. Nick carraway is also one of the important character in the entire novel. As a Narrato we can underthat he narrates the things from his own point of view. Also, he is not Judging anyone. So, In my point of view It can be seen as a Faithful narration.
Question- 6 :- Psychoanalytical Study of Jay Gatsby and write about his character.
Answer:- Psychoanalytical is the study of the minds if characters in the novel and how characters are affected by inner desire. In the novel - ' The Great Gatsby ' we see the story of essentric millionaire Jay Gatsby in his Journey towards achieving Daisy. The Great Gatsby shows how different Psychoanalytic personalities succeed or fail to achieve the American dream with a disregard to social staus or gender.
Jay Gatsby's desire to win Daisy at the Perfect place in the Perfect time is the biggest Psychoanalytic approach in the Great Gatsby. The only thing that he is truly passionate about is Daisy. Which is the driving force behind everything he does. He throw lavish Parties every weekend , hoping that one day Daisy will walk through his door and be impressed by his wealth.
Through Analytical study of Jay we found that his character filled with so many Emotions. Everyone has a natural attraction towards youth, wealth, beauty and power. No one had the power to challenge such things. Everyone attended his lavish Parties only but no one was there with him in his bad times or at the time of funeral. we can find shame in the character of Gatsby, the shame of belonging to small town and lower class. That is why he Pretend to being an Oxford man. He gained wealth from the illegal business of bootlegging and share market. He changes his name and gave other fake identities only to impress Daisy. Throughout the novel, he seems very Optimistic about everything and specially about Daisy that one day they both will live their lives happily together.
Here I am Putting the video of classroom presentation of the Novel - The Great Gatsby given by me and two other fellow classmates.
